performative concert of avant-schlagers / Irena Z. Tomažin

About the performance
The project Another Crying Game is the continuation of Irena Tomažin’s long-standing exploration of the voice in the field of free improvised music and the realm of sound and noise, the liminality of the voice, the body and the sounding of its mechanics.
Another Crying Game is a performance concert of avant-schlager songs that the artist has always stubbornly kept hidden, only pulling them out of her Pandora’s box on rare occasions. Some songs, their first ideas or themes, are over 19 years old. They span the time in which the artist has moulded her voice by kneading, writing, erasing and rewriting various fragments of lyrics that eventually became a song through persistent forgetting and revisiting. In addition to the live or recorded avant-schlager songs, she will also embody the characters and themes of the songs, which are in a way a play of (extreme) emotional states and fragments of stories from daily life – little dramas that capriciously shape the funny, bizarre and fateful ways we perceive ourselves, others and the world.
About the author
Irena Z. Tomažin is a dancer, choreographer, performer, vocalist, singer and improviser who is active on the national and international scene. To date, she has created ten performances that combine voice and movement. In her explorations of the physicality and expressiveness of the body, she incorporates the voice, sounds the body and emphasises physicality as a landscape of sound and voice. Her work moves between the intimate and extimate sound space of the body and the body in voice, sound and space and has already been awarded several times at the Biennial of Slovenian Contemporary Dance Art – Gibanica. She performs solo or in collaboration with choreographers, dancers, musicians and international ensembles at home and abroad. Her pedagogical work, for which she also received the Ksenija Hribar Award from the Slovenian Contemporary Dance Association in 2023, pursues an innovative approach to voice, body, movement, improvisation, speech and singing. She has been teaching workshops at home and abroad for many years. Together with her collaborator Alessi Castellacci, she runs a series of workshops entitled The World Is Sound, which focuses on the exploration of voice and improvisation.
